Brenda Blethyn confirms fate of Vera after ‘final’ episode airs

Is Vera coming back?

Fans left asking if tonight’s episode of Vera was the final one ever, have received the answer from its star Brenda Blethyn.

The star of one of TV’s biggest crime dramas responded directly to a fan, who took to X to ask “Why are lots here saying this is the last #Vera ?? Have I missed something??”

Brenda responded saying simply “it’s not the last” to reassure fans their favourite detective will be back. The Version can confirm the news, but fans are in for a long wait because a new series wont air until 2025.

Tonight’s episode, the final one in a three part series, saw Vera investigate when the body of the co-owner of a chip shop is found in his own freezer. A seemingly successful entrepreneur and dedicated family man, Vera uncovers secrets, lies and some unforgivable behaviour as she tries to unwrap the case. Once the investigation begins, it soon becomes apparent that our enigmatic entrepreneur has left behind debts, broken promises, ruined lives and seriously interfered in family business that was not his own.

Speaking ahead of this, the 13th series, Brenda said “Stepping back into Vera’s shoes for the thirteenth series feels like coming home again. The support from the locals in the North East is truly heart-warming and reuniting with the talented David Leon and the rest of our exceptional team is an absolute delight. Together, we embark on this new chapter with a terrific script crafted by the brilliant Paul Matthew Thompson.”

The three self-contained crime stories in the new series draw inspiration from the best-selling novels and characters created by acclaimed crime writer Ann Cleeves.

Fans can stream all 13 series of Vera on ITVX. The show is set to return to production later this year.
