TV Tonight: Pompeii The New Dig unearths an ancient horse harness.

Watch or stream tonight at 8pm on BBC Two and iPlayer

In Pompeii The New Dig, the dig continues and the all-Italian team of archaeologists discover the remains of a horse harness. As they cannot find any remains of the horse, they wonder if it managed to escape Pompeii as the eruption began.

Professor Steven Tuck of Miami University joins the team as he seeks to trace those who might have escaped the city and determine the number of people who lived in Pompeii.

Interweaving incredible finds with the stories of real individuals who we know lived in Pompeii, this series promises to change how we think about life in the ancient city.

Jack Bootle, Head of Commissioning, Specialist Factual, says: “I’m delighted that the team at Pompeii are allowing the BBC to document this extraordinary excavation in a major three-part series. The dig has already yielded some incredible treasures, including new remains and the recently discovered “pizza fresco”, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.”

Richard Bradley, Chief Creative Officer, Lion TV, says: “To be filming a new dig of this scale at Pompeii is a unique privilege. The audience will have a ring-side seat as the archaeologists open a window into the ancient Roman world frozen in time two thousand years ago. The discoveries are already thrilling with more to come.”

Catch up with episode one on BBC iPlayer.
