It’s the second leg of Susan’s river cruise through Portugal’s stunning Douro valley and, in this stage of the journey, there’s plenty of laughter – and a few drinks – to be shared!

Susan and a gang of new best friends from the ship head out on a vineyard tour to the Quinta São Luiz – one of the oldest port houses in Portugal. There she sees a traditional – and surprising way – to crack open a bottle. After a quick tasting, she’s off for a relaxing spa treatment in Lamego – and discovers that, in this part of the world, they even bath in the grapes!

In Pinhão Susan swaps the cruise ship for a train, as she takes a scenic ride along the banks of the Douro river. Then it’s time to head back to Porto for a bit of souvenir shopping and some lunch – a traditional sandwich called a francesinha, which is unlike any sandwich Susan has ever tasted before.

But before she heads for home, Porto has a couple more surprises for her. A group of student singers called Tunas serenade Susan with some traditional songs before she says farewell from one of the iconic wooden Rabelo boats that sail up and down the Douro river.

icymi, in last week’s episode, Susan’s journey started in Porto, where she tackled her fear of heights aboard the cable car that straddles the city. Once back down to earth, it was off to the ship which is tackling a very different challenge – the Carrapatelo lock. It’s the biggest in Europe and one of the many locks that has tamed this wild river, allowing ships to travel its length safely.

Susan and some new cruise friends stopped off at the Casa Mateus Palace and Gardens in Vila Real and, further down the river, she relived the siege of Almeida with the help of some very convincing historical re-enactors. Stream the episode on My5.

Next week, in a special two-part adventure, Susan goes to the ends of the earth on a truly epic cruise to Antarctica, travelling over 8,500 miles from her home in Glasgow to South America – and that’s even before she gets onboard the ship.
