ITV confirm when Tom Brittney’s final season of Grantchester will air

ITV has officially announced the release date for the upcoming ninth and final season of Grantchester, featuring Tom Brittney’s Reverend Will Davenport as the central character for the last time.

Although the news may evoke mixed emotions for fans, the return to their screens is imminent. Grantchester Season 9 is scheduled to premiere on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at 9 pm.

This season marks the farewell of Tom Brittney’s character, a decision he made earlier this year to pursue new projects including films made through his own company. However, viewers will not only bid adieu but also be introduced to the charming new vicar, Alphy Kotteram, portrayed by Rishi Nair (known for roles in Hollyoaks and Count Abdulla).

Brittney’s tenure began in 2019 when he took over from James Norton (of Happy Valley fame), who portrayed the lead character, Sidney Chambers.

Despite the impending departure, fans will have the opportunity to enjoy the crime-solving duo of Will and Geordie (played by Robson Green) once again in the new season. However, this time around, a life-altering proposition will cast a spotlight on Will’s future in Grantchester.

Set in 1961, the series will depict the seemingly idyllic life of Will and Geordie, with their families closely knit. However, when Will faces a transformative offer, the question arises: Can he leave Grantchester and Geordie behind? Meanwhile, Geordie grapples with personal loss and familial conflicts, and an unexpected arrest may suggest that his days working with a vicar are far from over.

The series synopsis provides a glimpse into the challenges that await the crime-solving pair: “From deadly circuses, abandoned babies, and hostile historians to vanishing valets and murderous satirists. Together, Geordie and Alphy witness first-hand how religion can be corrupted, but also how faith, love, and friendship can offer hope – and renewal.”

The upcoming season will feature the return of familiar faces, including Robson Green as Geordie, Charlotte Ritchie as Bonnie, Al Weaver as Leonard Finch, Tessa Peake-Jones as Mrs C, and Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy Keating. Additional returning cast members include Oliver Dimsdale, Nick Brimble, Bradley Hall, and Melissa Johns.

Grantchester can be streamed on ITVX in the UK and on Masterpiece PBS in the U.S.
