Humax TV Tonight: Scream

Scream premieres on Channel 4 tonight at 9.20pm

Returning to the forefront of meta-comedy horror, the franchise that redefined the genre takes another chilling stab at your nerves. With the familiar faces of Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and even Courteney Cox’s ex-husband, David Arquette, alongside the iconic presence of Ghostface, one might expect the quintessential essence of Wes Craven’s direction. However, with Craven’s absence since 2015, the fifth installment of Scream ventures into new territory, blurring the lines between reboot and sequel, aptly dubbed a “re-quel” by one of its characters, acknowledging its cinematic alter ego, Stab.

While the game remains familiar, there’s an influx of fresh blood. Gone are the days of landlines, as showcased in Drew Barrymore’s iconic scene from 1996; now, Jenna Ortega’s Tara Carpenter grapples with the annoyance of silencing her smartphone. Unlike her predecessor, Tara survives, prompting her sister Sam (portrayed by Melissa Barrera) to return to the haunting grounds of Woodsboro, accompanied by her boyfriend Richie (played by Jack Quaid). Alongside Tara’s circle of friends, they become Ghostface’s latest targets.

Inevitably, the new generation seeks aid from the legacy characters, leading Sam to enlist the help of Deputy Dewey (Arquette), who reunites the formidable trio by reaching out to Sid (Campbell) and Gale (Cox). Yet, amidst the reunion, the pressing question looms: who is behind the mask this time, and what drives their sinister motives, concealed beneath voluminous attire?
