Review: Come From Away at Curve Leicester ★★★★

Winner of Best New Musical across the globe, Come From Away shares the incredible real-life story of the 7,000 air passengers from all over the world who were grounded in Canada during the wake of 9/11, and the small Newfoundland community that invited these ‘come from aways’ into their lives.

Experience the joy, heartache, and soaring music as the spirited locals and global passengers overcome their fears and a world of cultural differences to come together and forge friendships that will stay with them forever.

The first female American Airlines captain, the quick-thinking town mayor, the mother of a New York firefighter and the eager local news reporter are among the many real characters caught at the start of the moment that changed the course of history, and whose stories became a true celebration of hope, humanity and unity.

Tony Award-winning director Christopher Ashley alongside Olivier Award-winning writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein bring this amazing story to life in a life-affirming production that has had audiences on their feet every single night.

“Come From Away” is an absolutely heartwarming and captivating musical that truly touches the soul. Set against the backdrop of the tragic events of 9/11, this remarkable production manages to uplift and inspire with its message of unity, kindness, and the indomitable human spirit.

The story unfolds with such grace and sensitivity, seamlessly weaving together the tales of the diverse characters whose lives intersect in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland. As the townsfolk open their hearts and homes to the stranded passengers of diverted flights, the audience is taken on a poignant journey of empathy and understanding.

The music of “Come From Away” is simply sublime, with its infectious rhythms and soul-stirring melodies. Each song is a masterpiece in its own right, effortlessly conveying the range of emotions experienced by the characters. From moments of heartache to those of joyous celebration, the score perfectly complements the narrative, leaving a lasting impression long after the final curtain falls.

As “Come From Away” continues its run at Curve Leicester until March 9th, I cannot recommend it highly enough. This is more than just a musical – it’s a celebration of the human spirit and a reminder of the power of kindness and compassion in the face of adversity. Don’t miss your chance to experience this extraordinary production – it’s a journey you won’t soon forget.

In a 100 minutes we witnessed strangers turn into family, with a bond unbroken. Told through cleverly written songs and inspiring back stories, ‘Come from away’ is the tale of a small community who without thought of what was in it for themselves went above and beyond to help stranded airplane passengers during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Whilst the world was focussed on an act of evil, the people of Newfoundland practiced kindness showing that despite adversity, there is still good in the world. From the first rousing chorus to the last bow, ‘Come from away’ elicits tears and laughter through a brilliant cast and subtle but impactful changes of props. Dynamic choreography and striking lighting helped to convey the emotions of initial terror then retrospective gratitude, in a journey that we, the audience were swept along with.

With a loyal and supportive fanbase of the show, it was clear to see why people, who were sat near to us in the theatre, had seen it numerous times! I left the theatre feeling like I had renewed faith in humans and that at my very next opportunity I would like to practise a random act of kindness!
