Review: Argylle is an enjoyable ride that will keep you laughing all the way ☆☆☆☆

Argylle is out now.

“Argylle” follows the globetrotting adventures of super-spy Argylle across the U.S., London and other exotic locations, featuring a star-studded, award-winning cast including Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose and Samuel L. Jackson.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn, “Argylle” is based on a script written by Jason Fuchs. The film is produced by Cloudy Productions and Vaughn’s regular collaborators Adam Bohling and David Reid, as well as Fuchs. Zygi Kamasa, Carlos Peres, Claudia Vaughn and Adam Fishbach serve as executive producers.

We thought we’d wait for the hype die down before heading to the local multiplex to se what it’s like…

“Argylle” is like the love-child of “Kingsman” and “Bridget Jones’ Diary”. It’s brash, chaotic, tongue-in-cheek and we have to say, it’s also funny. There were plenty of moments that made us laugh out loud, mostly thanks to Bryan Cranston and Bryce Dallas Howard’s superb comic acting.

The plot is nuts, and it’s not an easy one to explain, but essentially, Bryce Dallas Howard’s characfter things she’s an author but in actual fact, she herself is a spy and what she thinks is works of fiction are actually her memories. That means she soon gets embroiled in a terrorism plot.

Much better than Netflix’s boring Red Notice, there’s added humour thanks to a brilliantly animated cat called Alfie.

Henry Cavill plays a lesser part in the film than the promo would have you believe, but it’s nice to see him having fun in a lighter role for once. Catherine O’Hara does what she does best, as does Samuel L. Jackson.

The film looks fantastic on screen, and there’s genuinely never a dull moment. It moves from one location to the next, with decent action sequences and some nice set-pieces. It has a great soundtrack too, including Now and Then by The Beatles which is used to great effect.

“Argylle” is not trying to be Bond, nor Bourne. It really feels like this has been written from a good place of being a funny, entertaining and brash flick that intends to do nothing more than take you on a fun ride whilst you devour your popcorn. Catch it on the big screen before it moves to Apple TV+
